Focus Your Fire: Using the Aries New Moon to Create a Supercharged Vision Board

The New Moon is often regarded by practitioners as the start of the lunar cycle. For those who do lunar workings, we usually use this time to determine what we want for the next few weeks. As the moon grows, as it waxes from darkness to its full shine, and so too the things in our lives start small and grow over time. It’s important to set firm intentions to make sure the seed we plant is something we truly want to foster, rather than choosing to grow things that impede our progress.

When the New Moon is in Aries, Aries lends its energy to the moon — and to us, as well. It’s the perfect time for new beginnings, especially when you need to take action quickly, or you need to make a bold change. Aries New Moon asks us to stir up the stagnant, to prepare ourselves to run headfirst into the future, and take hold of what we desire and deserve by the horns. It asks you to step into your power, take risks, and see your big dreams as attainable!

To harness this passion Aries gives us, I like to bring it down to earth in a vision board. For those unaware, a vision board is a collection of images and sayings that you create, either physically or digitally, that helps you focus on a singular goal and inspire you to work towards it. I create vision boards all the time to collect my ideas in one place, but what I put here will be more of a ritual— something with intent and power behind it, rather than just a fun exercise.

Before You Begin

Before we start getting magical, it’s important to gather the components of the spell. No matter what sort of vision board you wish to create, you need to get clear and get specific on what you truly desire. If you aren’t sure what you want, I would take some time, possibly on the day before or the day of the Aries New Moon, to go to a quiet place and think over these following questions.

  • What excites you? What sparks passion? Joy? Curiosity? Creativity? What makes you feel truly alive? Are you doing these things regularly? How can you have more of these things in your life?
  • What are you doing out of obligation to others, and what are you doing because you actually want to be doing it? What expectations are being placed on you by outside forces? What do you truly desire to be doing instead, but are perhaps too afraid of how others will view it?
  • How does my body feel? What do I think about on a regular basis? How would I like to feel, and what would I like to think about? What feels easy in my body? What feels constricting?

I find that asking these questions can help me get clearer on what I truly want and desire in my life, let alone in the next lunar cycle. Remember that these answers can and will change over time, and that’s a good thing. The more you answer them genuinely, the more you understand your true self, the closer you’ll be to your true desires.

Gathering Your Supplies

When gathering your supplies in preparation for this ritual, you need to decide whether you’ll be creating something physical or digital. I often find that physical boards are better for infusing my intent and personal magic into (because I love to craft and use my palms as a conduit), but digital boards are fantastic in the ways of being easily hidden (for closet witches) or being able to take them absolutely anywhere (due to easily being accessed from your phone).

Physical Vision Board Materials

  • A board to put it on
    • Big poster boards from craft suppliers like Michael’s
    • Smaller boards from Walmart, Target, or even Dollar Tree
    • Any sturdy cardboard or card stock you might already have on hand
  • Printed Images and Phrases
    • Images from the internet, printed out on your printer
    • Images and clippings from newspapers, magazines, packaging, or greeting cards
    • Photographs
    • Drawings and personal artwork
  • Markers, Pens, and Pencils
  • Adhesive (Tape, Glue, Poster Tack)

Digital Vision Board Options

  • Pinterest – Easily create your own vision board through getting inspiration from others and pinning to a new board you set with your intentions, though be careful not to get sidetracked.
  • Canva – Other people have made wonderful templates for you to easily slot images of your own into, or you can always make your own.

Magical Materials

  • Your favourite way to cleanse your space
  • Red or Orange candle for Aries energy, or Black for New Moon Energy
  • Crystals (especially crystal chips) that align with your intention
    • Carnelian for confidence
    • Garnet for motivation and determination
    • Citrine for success and positivity
    • Tiger’s Eye for focus and perseverance
    • Clear Quartz for clarity and concentration
  • Herbs that align with your intention
    • Cinnamon for love, prosperity, and success
    • Bay leaves for wish granting and eliminating obstacles
    • Rosemary for cleansing, clarity, and mental growth
    • Basil for abundance, success, and attracting opportunities
    • Thyme for prosperity, confidence, and personal power

Selecting Images

You might be tempted to just include any image that looks cool, but be aware of your intentions. Make sure every image is important, such that if you took away an image, the whole board would lose something significant. Be very clear on the intentions behind every image and what else it might symbolise. Make certain that the universe, spirits, guides, and deities understand what you mean and leave no room for ambiguity.

Creating the Vision Board

  1. Cleanse your space with smoke (I use rosemary), or in a customary way you like to do so.
  2. Call in the energy from Aries. I like to simply light a candle, but you may ask a deity you associate with Aries to come into your space, to invoke the spirit of fire, or request Aries’ presence directly. I also like to put on any music that feels motivational to me on as I do my working!
  3. Place your crystals and herbs around you as you work, letting their energies infuse the space you’re in while you’re making your vision board.
  4. If you’re making your board physically, on the back of each image, draw the symbol for Aries (♈) while focusing your intent for that image. If this is a digital vision board, you can trace it on your desk or on the back of your phone while keeping that intent in your mind.
  5. When you’re finding the perfect place to set your image, utter an affirmation that holds weight to you. If you don’t have any or aren’t a fan of affirmations, you can chant: “My heart is strong, my path is clear, / I grasp my goals, I have no fear.
  6. When you’ve set your last image down, make sure that it all looks how you want it. Do any last minute adjustments. If you’re making this physically, you can now adhere the pieces to the board, leaving a little bit of space in the corners or around some of the images.
  7. If this is a physical vision board, take your colored candle and light it, then drip a bit of the wax carefully onto the board. While the wax is still warm and soft, place your selected crystal chips and/or herbs onto the wax. If this is a digital board, you can find images (or even take images of your own!) of crystals and herbs that carry your intention to add to the vision board.
  8. Go outside (if able) and call down the power of the New Moon to infuse this board with the intention of planting this seed of growth.
  9. Return inside (if you left) and thank any deities, spirits, or energies you called down and let them go. Blow out any candles, and bring any music down slowly.
  10. Write the date on the back of the board (if physical) or save the board with the date in the title.

After the Ritual

Make sure to admire your board! Keep it somewhere you’ll see it to remind yourself of what you’re trying to manifest, whether that’s as a phone background or an art piece above your altar.

In the next few days, if you haven’t already, make an action plan to take actual steps, even if gradual, towards your goal. Aries demands movement and momentum, so be sure to keep taking action that aligns with your desires!

At the next Full Moon, see what sorts of things you’ve noticed that have happened to help you towards your manifestation. What went well? What needs work? The Waning Moon after this coming Full Moon can be used to clear out things that didn’t work and see if anything needs changing.

As with any spellwork, especially manifestation magic, it makes a world of difference if you believe you can make this change in your life. Aries reminds us to keep moving forward and that we cannot truly fail if we continue to pick ourselves back up. The only time we truly fail is when we give up entirely on ourselves— and Aries isn’t about to let you do that.

Use the Aries New Moon to start the new projects stored up in your heart and take fearless action!

Let me know what you think, and if you do end up doing this, let me know how it goes! I’d love to see what you’ve created. ✨
